Emma Holten’s ‘Underskud’, meaning deficit,
is a book about feminist economy. It has a
critical view on a dominating tendency of
everything always being valued according to its
economical potential.
As a consequence of this, care virtues are lost
in the big accounting - For how do you value a
hug, making sure everyone gets to participate
in the conversation during the lunch break or
helping someone who is having a bad day?
In this design, I have been working with
contrasts to conceptualize this absurdity
visually:
On the front of the cover, I have made a collage
of two of my classmates hugging, printed on
a pile of old receipts with a thermal recipe
printer.
The back of the book is bound in an old wallet,
wherein i have placed a collection of care-like,
constructive or femininely charged objects
instead of money. These objects are also found
printed and coated with silver foil on the books’
endpapers.
